The main doorway to the Palle Maala (or Palle Maluwa, the lower chamber) area of the Sri Dalada Maligawa or The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic in Kandy, Sri Lanka. This 16th century Buddhist Temple complex (now a World Heritage Site declared by UNESCO) which houses a Tooth Relic of Lord Buddha is one of the most sacred places of veneration for Buddhists around the world.
The Temple has sustained damage from multiple bombings in the past. Deadliest among them was a suicide attack carried out by Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) on 25/01/1995. A bomb laden truck was detonated inside the temple premises causing significant damage to the Palle Maala area (claiming the lives of dozens of innocent civilians and injuring scores of others).
