television poems

let me ask you a question…
is that a question or the preamble to a question
begging permission?
do I get to decline or duck it?
do you see what you have put into play?
I’m going away for awhile
I don’t care if you are better off without me
the merry-go-round on the boardwalk
meets family responsibilites
we’ll need back-up
we won’t get back to town until late tomorrow night
*

he shot his partner but that was a given
it’s not the first time
poetry was flattened into television
*

he was a killer so what? he was my father!
god bless america
we will be wounded together
*

if it were up to me I would be
someone else by now
these sabre-toothed fish
will fly for fresh meat
if you electrocute the sea
the best looking of the bunch
survive to laugh again
but now they are after the children
who are licking salt out of the navels
of beautiful models full of tequilla
nobody wants you to die here
but nobody cares if you live

  • thanks Ernie, much appreciated appreciation. any time i happen to see a teevee on… don’t own one myself… but they are omnipresent… i am simultaneously disgusted and enthralled (absurdity always affects me this way) and i have wanted to write a book of poems called Television Poems… this was a first attempt. glad you don’t have yourself wired to the cable!
