ode to madness #10

was it a dream or madness?
the cemetery in Camden
New Jersey
full of miniature houses
for the dead when
the dead had names
to be remembered
by the time I got there it was evening
and the city invincible
surrounded me with decrepitude
and darkened windows without glass
the gate to the poet’s mausoleum was locked
I was young and wanted to break in
and read a poem over his bones
but a car was approaching
I turned and walked directly to an open
gate in a nameless tomb named Will
I couldn’t resist descending the tiny stone stairs
step by step trying to adjust my eyes
to the swampy shadows looming up from the floor
below
stones without windows
a stone table with the stone box on it
what if I were locked in?
a mad thought
suddenly a light was on
or was it a dream?
