World war 1 digger. Had awful trouble with the rifle. Wanted it authentic, but wasn’t sure exactly what it was or what it looked like. Searched the internet, but only found blurry indistinct black and whites. I was struggling from one of these but couldn’t be sure if it had a metal band around the end or not. Then the chap who’s beach house I had been staying at for some time walked in. I said, “You are a gun enthusiast, can you tell me if there is a metal band around the tip there. I am having trouble here, I don’t even know for sure what rifle it was that they used.” He replied, “It was a Lee Enfield, would you like to see one?” And with that he went to his safe and produced a perfectly preserved but well used World War 1 rifle. I am afraid the rifle is actually better than the portrait.
