Backlit sea study. I bought a watercolour from John C Goodchild in about 69 of Polperro. I was so intrigued by the painting that I went over there determined to discover Polperro. After some hours, and with a photograph of the painting in hand I settled on almost the very spot that he must have sat. Only I was at a slightly hligher elevation. After a while I found a little walking track down the side of the steep hill and at the bottom I found a house (no driveway). It was from here I decided, that he had painted my picture, so I knocked and a shrivelled up little old lady came to the door.
She was very abrupt, “Yes, what do you want.”. So I said do you happen to know John Goodchild. Immediately her face softened and she invited me in for tea. Needless to say there were Goodchilds on most of her walls. Her balcony was where he had sat. She invited me to spend the night, so I did a number of scetches and took many photographs.
