Guido, who was in his early thirties stepped into the dark tunnel holding the small candle out in front of him as if to chase away the shadows. He pulled the door behind him and waited for the loud clank as the clasp engaged. He didn’t lock it; he needed to come back this way. The flame from the candle flickered and small demon shadows danced across the damp walls. He could hear dripping water coming from nearby and showed no concern, it shouldn’t matter to him.
When his eyes became accustomed to the dark he noticed another faint, flickering light coming from the other end of the tunnel. He moved forward towards it and stepped around a sharp bend. He knew his friends had everything set and all was now ready for him to do his duty for the people.
He had been in other tunnels just like this one while serving in the Spanish army doing the same job. This time though it wasn’t an order coming from his superiors but more of a pleasurable experience for him as if doing it was keeping his hand in so to speak.
The small number of people he had known from around the area had approached him a few weeks earlier and had presented him with their plan and he had agreed to go along with it but only if he could be there for the finish. They had readily granted his wish knowing that if he was caught King James would have him killed and not them.
The 36 barrels were stacked high at the end of the tunnel as requested by him. He checked them over and smiled in the gloom stroking his long beard.
He heard muffled voices coming through the brick roof above him and he knew now was the time.
He lit the fuse and calmly walked back the way he had come only to be stopped by guards from the chambers above him.
He was knocked to the ground and one guard stepped on the fuse before it had time to blow up the barrels of gunpowder.
“What is your name?”
“They call me Guido.”
“And your surname?”
“Fawkes.”
“Guido Fawkes. Is that Spanish?”
“Yes, Guido is Spanish given to me from the Spanish army in which I served. My real name is Guy, Guy Fawkes.”
