Off To Fairyland (By Way Of Fairyloons) – CCW20
Sandy suddenly felt herself floating higher and higher up into the beautiful blue sky. She wasn’t afraid because the man with the fairyloons had told her not to be, so she wasn’t. She had seen his stall set up behind everyone else’s at the fairground but no one was going over to see what he had and she felt so sorry for him. As she approached him the sadness left his face and changed into a beautiful beaming smile.
“Hello Sandy.” He said still smiling. “How are you today, I hear you haven’t been all that well lately?”
“How did you know my name?” She asked stepping back a little.
“Oh it’s ok my dear little one, I don’t bite. I know everyone’s name. Come closer so we can talk without shouting.”
“Oh, er, yes, sorry.” Sandy said moving nearer again. “You can’t be too careful these days can you?”
“Wise words my dear; I bet your mum told you that?”
“Why, yes she did. You seem to know a lot about me how did you know about my illness have you seen me at the hospital?”
“Not quite.” He said still smiling and Sandy wondered how he could talk and smile like that at the same time showing his big bright teeth.
He started to laugh.
“What’s so funny?” Sandy asked.
“Well, I just read your mind again and that’s how I know about your illness.”
So you heard my thoughts when I was thinking ‘how you could talk and smile at the same time.’”
“Yes I did.” He said still chuckling.
“Oh, I am sorry.” Sandy said. “I hope I haven’t offended you?”
“Not at all my dear, not at all.” He said wiping the tears of laughter from his eyes. “Now, listen, I know where you can get better, would you like to go there and get rid of that nasty illness once and for all?”
“I would but the doctors say I am never going to get better.”
“Nonsense Sandy, if you take these strings here you will fly off to Fairyland and come back with the cancer completely gone. Would you like that?”
“More than anything but what about mummy she’ll be worried about me?”
“She won’t even know you have gone, come on grab onto these.”
Sandy took the strings the man offered and she looked up expecting to see balloons full of helium but it wasn’t balloons it was thousands of tiny fairies each with the other end of the string tide around a tiny waist and they lifted her off the ground and high up into the sky. The man was still smiling and waving to her as she went out of sight behind a cloud.
As I started this tale I said the sky was a beautiful blue colour if you remember? Well it had started out blue with the white cotton wall fluffs for clouds but it was changing before Sandy’s eyes. It was turning into a beautiful golden, yellow, red, orange sunset and the more beautiful it became the better Sandy felt. The tiny fairies started to lower her towards the ground by the side of a silver pool and a couple of minutes later her white sandals were on a firm path. One of the fairies came down and whispered into her ear and said to drink from the pool which she did and as she did so she immediately fell asleep.
She saw her mother coming toward her in her sleep and she knew she was dreaming and her mother was calling to her and then gently shaking her.
“Sandy, Sandy, wake up darling we have to get ready for your appointment come on or we’ll be late.”
Sandy woke up smiling, got out of bed and had a wash and got herself dressed and tried to remember the dream while she was brushing her teeth. Then as she went down the stairs to meet her mother she remembered the kind man with the nice smile and bright teeth and the Fairyloons and having a drink. And she started to smile.
“What are you so happy about today Sandy?” Her mother asked kindly.
“Oh, I think I am going to be alright mum, that’s all.” And she reached up and kissed her mother’s cheek.
The End but not for Sandy.
