Beside the banana tree
A woman in a bright orange dress looks out over the backwaters in Kerala, India.
That is a banana tree she is standing next to. Not only is it’s fruit delicious and sweet (much better than the crappy bananas we get in Melbourne), but the large leaves are used as plates for eating spicy ‘thali’ throughout Kerala and Tamil Nadu.
I would like to have framed this a little differently, but it was taken from a moving boat, and only seen at the last second.

great use of depth of field and focus, her dress gives good contrast as well. nice work

I reckon the framing is spot on! The hands exude such calm – a brilliant capture indeed

Love it! Those white spots seems like it could be birds she’s looking at. Love the dramatic foreground, accentuate the lovely orange dress…. ummm orange is my favourite colour,
ovely orange, not lovely dress ;-)

The framing is great Ant. It really tells a story too. Fantastic shot!
Jane Keats
Well great effort from a boat! I love it, the colours and the figures of the woman and the tree :o)

very nice capture Anthony, I can’t believe how sharp it is being taken from a moving boat. You can certainly make your own story out of this…and nothing wrong with this framing

It’s a great photo Anthony, such wonderful light… And my mouth is watering at the thought of Thalis – yum!
Wendy Slee
a beautiful image, she seems deep in contemplation….wonder if she would ever get glimpses of our world, the way we just have of hers…
thank you Anthony….

I love the bright orange against the surrounding greens. The distant birds are nice too, that she is viewing. The way her hands are positioned adds to the photo interest. Thanks for sharing the knowledge about the leaves and bananas. That is very interesting. I have never seen a banana tree. Smiles from Jane:-)
migaloomagic
how well you did to take this from a moving boat….
we used to grow banana trees at Tottenham (western NSW) and Port Macquarie (at the watchhouse/local luckup keepers residence).....and we have many photos of me under
the banana trees…..i find this image takes me right into it…... i’m really drawn to it,
wonderful wonderful work!

This is a really beautiful candid shot, and sharp too,,seeing as it was one of those ‘one chance’ photo’s, (of which ive buggered plenty of them up ! ) can you tell me what lens you used ? i’m looking for a new one and cant decide.. I was thinking about a 16-35 f2.8 ..this picture is the kind of depth and performance i’m after..Thanks !!! Loren..BTW im usually a portrait photographer and am cofortable in that area but lately i am getting into lanscapes/seascapes/long exposures/HDR’S…
Anthony Begovic replied
Hey Loren
Thanks for your nice comment about my photo.
This was taken with a 70-200 f/2.8L. BRILLIANT portrait lens (but not much good for landscapes)! I also highly recommend the 24-70 f/2.8L – that is probably the lens I use most often. I have the 16-35 f2.8L, too – also fantastic – but I tend to use it more for landscapes and urban environment. The 24-70 is a nice ‘in-between’. Anyway, just let me know if you need any more help – and let me know what you decide to get!
cheers

This is the last shot of yours I am commenting on today lest you think me some kind of photographic stalker. I really like your style, not many people can make such a great portrait out of a persons back and a paddock. Well done!
Anthony Begovic replied
Ha ha .. stalk away, my friend! Thanks for all the inspiring comments! I promise to go through your folio in detail when I get a spare minute at some point today.
cheers Ant
