Bridget Jones’s Diary is 12th in my Top 10 Movie Series.
On New Year’s Day, hung over and still single, Bridget Jones, a 32 year old London girl decides to get a grip on her life and starts a diary…’Resolution one is to lose twenty pounds. Number two will find a nice sensible boyfriend and not continue to form romantic attachments to alcoholics, workaholics, peepling toms, megalomaniacs, emotional xxxxwits or perverts."
But Bridget finds it is not easy to keep new years resolutions and finds it difficult to chose between bona-fide-sex-god with big car Daniel Cleaver and aloof but good looking and thoughtful sensitive man Mark Darcy. There are some direct and humourous allusions to one of my favourite novels and mini series of all time Pride & Prejudice.
Renee Zellweger is Bridget Jones. Her accent is superb and she embodies the role with such finesse and authenticity. Hugh Grant is Daniel Cleaver and Colin Firth is Mark Darcy and they offer tension and rivalry as Bridget’s two love interests. Their duel is a highlight in the film and plays out to the upbeat tune “It’s raining men”.
A wonderful romantic comedy that makes you smile and laugh and at the same time proving that reality is often a lot different to the way things appear :)
