Girl, Interrupted by Anthea Slade

Girl, Interrupted starring Winona Ryder and Angelina Jolie is a true story set in the turbulent world of the late 60’s about a young woman Susanna Kaysen (Winoa Ryder) sees herself prescribed a short rest at a renowned mental institution. Rebelling against the head nurse and psychitrist Susanna Kaysen befriends the resident lunatics, a group of troubled women led by the seductively captivating Angelina Jolie in her Oscar winning performance as Best Supporting Actress in 1999. Angelina steals the show in every scene with her reckless, nuanced performance and gives us exposure to what ‘true’ insanity is about (?).

Here is a poem I wrote that has reference to Angelina and Winona in this movie. This poem was written in 2009.

Insane or Wired or Brilliant?

Brilliant Plath disappeared in her Bell Jar
Intense Vincent Van Gogh was labelled insane
And when he cut off his ear they cried he had gone too far
They cut poor Frances Farmers emotion out of her brain
And made her placid benign boring and dull
Angelina was considered already dead
Vulnerable girl interrupted accused of a lull
Her hurt was cold but her blood was red.

Insanity was thrown in my face at 17
When the high school boys shouted
My favourite artist Van Gogh was insane…
‘He is not’…I found my voice
‘He is sensitive, passionate, intense,
misunderstood…and Don Mclean had
it right on that Starry Starry Night
He took his life as Lovers often do…
I could have told you Vincent this world
Was never meant for one as
Beautiful as you.

Ah the eternal debate…
There is a fine line between
genius and insanity…they say
and how closely do we step the tight rope
With so much mental illness today
Exposed…Depression, Anxiety,
Bi-polar…Obsessive Compulsive
Disorder…A mental health professional
recently advised that 9 out of 10 have
a mental health issue.
Are so few exempt…are these figures really true?

With so much stimulation in the media, mobile, data
Sensory overload with iPods linked to our brain
Texting 24/7 with our mobiles we sleep instead of our lovers
Is the cyborg fantasy becoming a reality…?
in this wired generation?
Constantly on…we must be or we miss out…
We become fed by instant gratification
and stimulated by virtual admiration.
Addiction to this constant contact means that our
heads are overloaded with stimulus but
not given as much time to reflect, to think, to feel.

We are becoming overdeveloped in responding to stimulus
and underdeveloped in knowing our own heart.
Strangers and outcast to our own feelings
Dependent on the hit and the high of the new
and losing sight of the bravery of the subtle and simple.
Craving perfection and the eradication of foibles
we photoshop out our character lines and faults
so that we fit into some kind of ideal of the neo post notion of beauty.

Are not faults far more defining then some sanitised notion of perfection?
Are not our faults the real indicators of our individuality?
Is not our vulnerability a sign of our sanity?
Does not our sensitivity reveal that we still belong to humanity?
Taking time to celebrate and know the individual in their idiosyncrasies
Surely this is worth the effort rather then striving for some standard of
fantasy that can never be translated?

I shudder when I think where we are headed
Man machine…woman machine…cyborgs half man half machine
I pray that disposable people, relationships that end with a click
of the key and people racing to rejection will never be the accepted.
And that the human mind, heart and soul will pause…think and
move the emotional muscle so that sensitivity can still survive
and link us together through heart and mind
right through to the end of time.

So Vincent, Sylvia, Frances, Angelina and Girl Interrupted
Insanity does not seem to be able to define,
What really was going on in your mind,
As far as I can tell…you all could see, think and feel,
Oh that you suffered and were misunderstood
This cannot be denied but you were
real raw and achingly human in your pain
and there was no question of your humanity
Even if there was and still is a question over your sanity.

To me you were brilliant, free, sensitive and intense
And by all indicators ahead of your time.
And I bow to your courage
to follow your own voice and live the
passion that was raw in your heart…
To me it is as if you just knew right from the start.

Creating art and writing is like breathing to me, it keeps me alive. If I stop creating my world shrinks and contracts. When I start to create again it expands and is filled with colour. I feel whole. To create is to be completely, unabashedly alive.

Some may comment that these are girls..women…in disgrace, feelings aroused to a peak of inconsciousness..I love your work of art, but I love even more your writing. There is much to be said about “madness”, “depression” and some real brave and intelligent souls have told much about it, that is revolutionary…
I have not seen the film myself…but will be attentive in order to see wether I can see it in TV. I am not worried or like books or films about our own mental health, but find that this is a world of self-discovery. I do not beleive that mental illness is just a brain´s deficiency ..I rather beleive that in many cases, it is the Soul striving for recognizing and realization. Hard is. Soul is a mirror, but it is also the light and shadow that makes possible the appereance of images. Imagination is the Soul of the artists, and so it takes different courses of that of the brain. It it would be for the brain, we would live in a world of insects, where nothing has changed along time, and no individual has any value over the mass. Species protected…we are not like that, and our mental infirmities are the clue of our individual beligerance agains the species survival, making it splendid, unique, an Universe of changing worlds, all in one lonely and wundrous personal soul, that has to cope with the environ.
Well…..I keep on my proposal of using this material for a new group…I am going to sketch it and send you my ideas..and if you have some just tell me. It could include films too…it is wonderful.

  • Amen Rosa. I love so much your wise and insightful comment. So true so true. I feel myself nodding in agreement with what you are saying. it is the Soul striving for recognizing and realization. Hard is. Soul is a mirror, but it is also the light and shadow that makes possible the appereance of images. These words it is the soul striving for recognition and realisation. I have read your words many times and they are salve to my soul. Thank you so much for friendship and thinking vision dear Rosa.

My lovely friend this art-work is divine the colors are gorgeous I love your writing you really describe this age of technology the constant multitasking not giving this new generation a chance to go and find the serenity within. We are all effected by this the minute we open our eyes we are bombarded with news and these days mostly bad so our anxiety levels have risen.
I have not see that movie but will be looking for it on DVD.

  • Oh thank you so much dear Renate. Yes this technology age has brought so many good things but it has also effected our sanity and our ability to connect on a heart level with ourselves and people. We are always switched on and wired in constantly and that has affected levels of anxiety and stress. This poem was written in one sitting in 2009 and was drawn out of deep thought and contemplation on these issues. Your comments alway inspire me. A delight to read.

I was looking and feeling and considering your art and words, when my friend the medical massage therapist came in for a chat. Your words are true, your facts are straight. As someone who is a bridge between the medical community and alternative health care, she see’s the facts: children with illnesses normally not seen until the 50’s and 60’s; children having haeart attacks; cancer reates approaching 50%, yes and mental capabilites diminshed through constant neuro stimulus. We are living through our heads and need to change, to live through our hearts – that will be the only thing that saves us. But there is an awakening happening, more and more are seeing things represented here in your art – and are understanding.

  • Amen Ken. It looks like you have left RB. Thank you for this beautiful insightful comments. You are so right when you said that mental capabilities dimished through constant neuro stimulus. We do live through heads and need to change to live through out hearts. We must integrate and nurture heart, mind, body and soul. I am glad there is an awakening happening and a deeper understanding. Things move so quick and it is important to reflect on constant changes.
