East of Eden Detail by Anthea Slade

East of Eden starring James Dean and Julie Harris is indeed one of my top 10 favourite films of all time. The haunting sensitivity of Julie Harris played beside the emotional vulnerability of James Dean (Cal) a wayward Salinas Valley youth who vies and tries so hard to win the affection of his hardened father (Raymond Massey) is an emotionally overwhelming film that always brings me to tears.

The achingly beautiful sensitivity of Julie Harris to James Dean highlights the heartbreaking desperation and struggle of (Cal) James Dean to wins his fathers approval.

East of Eden based on a novel by John Steinbeck and directed by Elia Kazan is the first of the three major fims that made up James Dean’s movie legacy.

east of eden, james dean, julie harris, emotional vulnerability, haunting sensitivity, struggle for approval, acceptance, reaching for love, top ten, emotionally overwhelming, anthea slade, love, connection

Creating art and writing is like breathing to me, it keeps me alive. If I stop creating my world shrinks and contracts. When I start to create again it expands and is filled with colour. I feel whole. To create is to be completely, unabashedly alive.

There is sadness emanating from both lovers. As if they would know that “betrayal” was implicit in the wonderful Paradise, and then, they would have to go, naked and loneline without God´s help anymore…that perfect archetypal symbolism of Soul´s developmental journey.
It is a great work with sensible mood, and intensity. Specially I like the different expression of both, man and woman, truly callibrating the different way both men and women can love each other. It is perfect, Anthea.
I remember the film is a magnificent psychoanalytical film, based in the construing of our own Soul while this is always fighting with the elements that have relation with her and that constellate in a “playing out” of disposition, capacities, sensibilities and actions. John Steinbeck is a master for creating profound stories, based in the anguish of human beings for finding the “home security” of Love and self-realization.

  • Oh wow dear Rosa your reading is just so insightful, beautiful and true. I have read a number of times. I agree with all that you say. I love John Steinbeck too, always have and this is a magnificent psychological film and touches me so deeply. Just recently watched movie and inspired this work. Thank you so much from my heart for your magnificent and profound comments on my work. Truly love every words that you write Rosa.
