Creating art and writing is like breathing to me, it keeps me alive. If I stop creating my world shrinks and contracts. When I start to create again it expands and is filled with colour. I feel whole. To create is to be completely, unabashedly alive.

Love these mask shots Anthea……………..so much mystery, love a good mystery ;-)

  • Oh thanks so much Adrian for lovely comment…yes a little mystery is a good thing. It is always intriguing to find what lies behind the mask – the essence of a person.

    Heya Anthea,

You know what a huge fan I am of your mask series, so am always glad to see more!

Feel free to discard the comment below, as usual.

I’ll have to get back to you on this one though. Part of me thinks that the black and white loses the contrast in colour, and therefore impact given by the curve of your jaw and gorgeous eye. This has the effect of making the mask even more prominent than previously.

HOWEVER, given the metaphor of the mask which we’ve discussed at length this may be a master stroke in the series. The intricacy and ultimate distraction of the mask from the face beneath it are more pronounced in this rendering than the colour ones.

So, in some ways I think it’s not as good as the others because the intensity of your eye peering out through the mask is lost, but the metaphor of the mask is greatly enhanced. Ummmm…..my head hurts, I need a Bex and a good lie down!

    Well done

Oh thank you so much Ken for your amazing critique and feedback on Half Mask. I see your point about the colour being far more dramatic with the blue eyes against the black…but I think you certainily identified my intention when you said that the mask was more prominent and that the metaphor is greatly enhanced…I was trying to bring out the Mask more – providing the detail in contrast to the subtle quietness of the portrait…I was going for a softer more gentle effect (quiet reflective quality) with this one. I really enjoyed reading your two perspectives - and to be honest I agree with both. I hope that your head no longer hurts my friend…maybe I will try sepia – that should be a totally different effect.

Thanks so very much for considered, sensitive and beautiful words Ken. Truly appreciate the feedback you give to my work.
