Vincent
Insane or Wired or Brilliant?
Brilliant Plath disappeared in her Bell Jar
Intense Vincent Van Gogh was labelled insane
And when he cut off his ear they cried he had gone too far
They cut poor Frances Farmers emotion out of her brain
And made her placid benign boring and dull
Angelina was considered already dead
Vulnerable girl interrupted accused of a lull
Her hurt was cold but her blood was red.
Insanity was thrown in my face at 17
When the high school boys shouted
My favourite artist Van Gogh was insane…
‘He is not’…I found my voice
‘He is sensitive, passionate, intense,
misunderstood…and Don Mclean had
it right on that Starry Starry Night
He took his life as Lovers often do…
I could have told you Vincent this world
Was never meant for one as
Beautiful as you.
Ah the eternal debate…
There is a fine line between
genius and insanity…they say
and how closely do we step the tight rope
With so much mental illness today
Exposed…Depression, Anxiety,
Bi-polar…Obsessive Compulsive
Disorder…A mental health professional
recently advised that 9 out of 10 have
a mental health issue.
Are so few exempt…are these figures really true?
With so much stimulation in the media, mobile, data
Sensory overload with iPods linked to our brain
Texting 24/7 with our mobiles we sleep instead of our lovers
Is the cyborg fantasy becoming a reality…?
in this wired generation?
Constantly on…we must be or we miss out…
We become fed by instant gratification
and stimulated by virtual admiration.
Addiction to this constant contact means that our
heads are overloaded with stimulus but
not given as much time to reflect, to think, to feel.
We are becoming overdeveloped in responding to stimulus
and underdeveloped in knowing our own heart.
Strangers and outcast to our own feelings
Dependent on the hit and the high of the new
and losing sight of the bravery of the subtle and simple.
Craving perfection and the eradication of foibles
we photoshop out our character lines and faults
so that we fit into some kind of ideal of the neo post notion of beauty.
Are not faults far more defining then some sanitised notion of perfection?
Are not our faults the real indicators of our individuality?
Is not our vulnerability a sign of our sanity?
Does not our sensitivity reveal that we still belong to humanity?
Taking time to celebrate and know the individual in their idiosyncrasies
Surely this is worth the effort rather then striving for some standard of
fantasy that can never be translated?
I shudder when I think were we are headed
Man machine…woman machine…cyborgs half man half machine
I pray that disposable people, relationships that end with a click
of the key and people racing to rejection will never be the accepted.
And that the human mind, heart and soul will pause…think and
move the emotional muscle so that sensitivity can still survive
and link us together through heart and mind
right through to the end of time.
So Vincent, Sylvia, Frances, Angelina and Girl Interrupted
Insanity does not seem to be able to define,
What really was going on in your mind,
As far as I can tell…you all could see, think and feel,
Oh that you suffered and were misunderstood
This cannot be denied but you were
real raw and achingly human in your pain
and there was no question of your humanity
Even if there was and still is a question over your sanity.
To me you were brilliant, free, sensitive and intense
And by all indicators ahead of your time.
And I bow to your courage
to follow your own voice and live the
passion that was raw in your heart…
To me it is as if you just knew right from the start.

ah yes,he was my insperation from the get go long ago,and i related to him too ,as i had a stress releted problem for a while, i loved his total art giving of him self to his first love, too bad he never had a lover who could have nutrured him but i guess that would not have happened he was who he was likeall of us in the end we are not echos, we are one of a kind if we dare?
Anthea Slade
Yes, I have always felt as if Vincent was a kindred spirit. I related to his emotional intensity and the fact that he was misunderstood by many. Visiting his Museum in Amsterdam I was overcome with the extraordinary beauty of his work and my eyes kept filling with tears. Yes I always felt sad that he could never find a lover who could love and nurture him. He had such an incrediable capacity to love and give. Thanks so much for your beautiful response to this painting I truly appreciate it.

Vincent has been a powerful influence on my art from a girl and have always felt great inspired by his art, his character and his soul. When I visited the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam I was so overcome by the beauty of his paintings that I couldn’t stop crying. I think I cried six times…glad that I was on my own. His art moves me on a deep emotional level. Thank you so much for the faourite of Vincent my friend.

years ago, birthday parties at our house included a game called “pin the ear on van gough”. my
children grew into magical artists, actors who could act “normal” in this utopian( literally, no where)society, while playing in the fields of the gods. evolutionarily, the adhd kids were the explorers enriching us. 90% mental ill thank god, there’s hope. saw a van gough exhibit, was struck by how small the pieces(no warhol). struggling, starving, sudden serendipity finds for us what we ignorantly ignore. substance abuse pales against neotribal social stigma. go, with both joy and reverence worship at the gates of creation. thanks for reminding us.
Anthea Slade replied
Wow lacewren…thoroughly enjoyed your story telling and parts of your autobiography…what a joy…use to teach autobiography at University after writing two of my own. Your writing is poetical and insightful…your response was a lyrical pleasure to my senses…thank you so very much.
LeapingPig
that’s a good portrait!
the poem really does accompany it well ;)
Anthea Slade replied
Thanks so much LeapingPig…I am glad you feel that my poem accompanies my portrait of Vincent well.
lacewren
irony 101, vincent means conqueror. doesn’t say immediately, though.
Anthea Slade replied
yes…interesting meaning…and I know what you mean.
Morris Hill
so cool
Anthea Slade replied
Thank you so much Morris Hill.

that cyborg reference. sad technostate when our own machines no longer flip us the bird. they too are selfabsorbed. pace of change accelerates, evolution of psychologies and intracranial hardware, yet the same billionyearold stateoftheart biochemistry cleans our sewage. seems me, spacetime is unilinear. can’t even counterfeit a return ticket, only peer from the caboose.
Anthea Slade replied
Wow lace another delightful and poignant insight that reveals the workings of your incisive and agile mind. Thank you for sharing my friend. Just got back today.
Symmetry45
Man this is brilliant. Did you do this????
Anthea Slade replied
Yes dear friend I did the drawing a long time ago and the poem in late March. Thanks so much Steve and glad to see you. I have just returned from the USA today.
Del Millar
hi Anthea, lovely work, me too a life time fan of Vincent, the ear incident has of late been in question – there’s some evidence that it may have been Vincent’s dear friend, the artist Paul Gauguin, that sliced Vincent’s ear off, and believed to have then been a long standing problem [hardly surprising] to be the reason behind the suicide.
You and I also share a concern for the effects of technical communications; fastest way to wreck relationships – time better spent getting real, the old saying families that play together stay together works.
And why young kids are given cell phones by their parents beats me, it’s a ticking time bomb.
As for photoshop images, I imagine there are a few shocks when people meet face to face ha ! Yet another trend downhill, inward thinking – obsession with perfection – what happened to character, the lovely real mobile happy natural face and the real body to go with it. Media greed has much to do with it, and false expectation. Personally I feel I’ve earned any marks that go with ageing gracefully and think there are more important things to think on than my latest new mark. All the money used for lifts tucks botox etc would go far towards real need. In the end, people seem to look like plastic. I imagine it could become quite a psycological obsession. What ever happened to revering the older person for their beauty of character and for the wisdom handed down to younger generations, and they do indeed need the encouragement.
Anthea Slade replied
Wow dear Del what a powerhouse comment and I loved reading every word. You speak such beautiful awareness with eloquence and grace. Your insight into the effects of technology is such a joy to read. And I think you are right about Paul Gauguin and Vincent. Vincent is my favourite of all artists too. Thanks for visiting my writing and art Del. Sorry for delay to get back to you. I just got back from the USA today after one month away from Melbourne.
David Friederich
I missed this one, Anthea. This is such a masterful work, and so inspired that I am thinking it is one your best (that I have seen). The poem is in itself a powerful piece. The two together are simply brilliant.
Anthea Slade replied
Dear David…so wonderful to come home after a month away in USA find this beautiful comment on my poem and art. I smiled when I read that you connected to both my poem and portrait. Thank you very much…your feed back truly inspires me my friend. I hope that you are very well.
Martin Dingli
Simply put a masterpiece
Anthea Slade replied
Oh thank you so very much Martin for writing this.
MoonSpiral
Wow, such a beautiful tribute Anthea. I am also so impressed with the writing he inspired. I follow your train of thought….and I do feel that this is exactly why the Divine Feminine energies are returning….to balance out exactly what you wrote about. It is ones like you that are impacting the change….though it may feel slow, it is happening NOW!!!
Anthea Slade replied
Oh Moon Spiral your comment is so beautiful and I feel so honoured that you think this about my tribute to Vincent and the poem I wrote to accompany his portrait. Yes I think you are right about Divine Feminine energies returning. Just got back after a month away :)
Antanas

Anthea Slade replied
Thank you so much Antanas for the lovely comment and favourite. I hope you are very well. I have been away from RedBubble for a month as I have been in United States and Canada.

i believe we are all children of the stars, star seeds you might say, but every now and then one breaks thru the atmosphere as a shooting star, a tektite you might say. our boy vinnie was one of them, insane? no…....he was a man of intense extremes, and passion carries a heavy burden, the burden to please and love, the desire to be overwhelmingly kind and to share what all along he shared, complete art from the heART….......over the years i have studied this unique being by all his art and reading his letters to his brother theo and Gauguin…...and also produced many portraits of him both with paint and also thru digital with just a few of the know actual photos of him…......picasso once said that “in the end there is only mattise”, i say on the end there is only our boy vincent van gogh….......besides this amazing portrait you created here your words are equally incredible….......bravo….....your bro vincent van crow
Anthea Slade replied
Oh dear bro vincent van crow…I just read and re-read your beautiful comment. You are right Vincent was not insane…he never was to me…ever. He was genius and I believe the best artist that ever lived. When I viewed his art at the Muse Dorsay in Paris and The Van Gogh Gallery in Amsterdam I cried my eyes out. I feel such a strong affinity with him – his work so achingly beautiful. Your understanding and words about him touch my soul…”no…….he was a man of intense extremes, and passion carries a heavy burden, the burden to please and love, the desire to be overwhelmingly kind and to share what all along he shared, complete art from the heART……....” Amen. You have described his essence. So eloquently and so perfectly expressed. Like you I have drawn and painted him many times, I have read his letters to his brother, watched his movies, studied his art and visited his gallery. Starry starry night is one of my favourite songs and paintings. Thank you so very much for writing this and sharing with me…to me your words are beautiful and true. Thank you so much Gallo.
mago
The way, in which you describe to Van Gogh,
It is wonderful.
Loving of the way that Van Gogh loves is not common, is not usual,
recognize that.
But, who is the insane, the one that do not know how to love, or the one that are able of cut an ear because it loves?
Anthea Slade replied
Oh thank you so much Mago for wonderful response. You make a very profound point here to ponder. I would tend to think it was the first thing you mentioned…the one that does not know how to love is more insane than one who would love so much to cut an ear. You are right van gogh was not common he was extraordinary…passionate, intense feeling his emotions on such a powerful level that most misunderstood his intensity. This made him an exceptional man and an extraordinary artist. Thank you so much for your beautiful words. They mean a lot.
Reynaldo
your free loose style and creatively delicious colors that run in control but with passion and imagination, this painting is brillantly excuted. was he insane with creativity or just mad, sometimes I feel that way grea work anthea cheers
Anthea Slade replied
Wow that is an excellent questions Reynaldo and I will ponder…Like you sometimes I feel that way too. Your beautiful sensitive response to Vincent made me smile. Thank you so much for writing these words and for making Vincent a favourite.
Kiera Dewar
absolutly beautiful poem and painting togther, even if they were seperte. – love the choice of colours – just beautiful
Anthea Slade replied
Thank you so very much for lovely response Kiera, favourite and for adding me to your watchlist. I am thrilled that you love Vincent and the poem.
Julialala
You’ve captured so much in his eyes! Pain, sadness, creativity, and a great deal of beauty. Wonderfully done, my friend! x
Anthea Slade replied
Oh Julia thank you for your insight and how you see the essence of Van Gogh in my portrait. I love your words and thank you so much for making Vincent a favourite my friend Julia. x
rise
Anthea..you really got it with this one
Anthea Slade replied
Oh thank you so very much Rise for lovely comment. I am thrilled you think I got it with this one. Vincent is my favourite artist.
Coronus
I loved your poem. But to have you add a wonderful image to it – is almost too much beauty for me to handle…lol. Well not really, you always somehow manage to weave words around art – merging them into something extraordinary.
It is an Anthea trademark. lol.
Anthea Slade replied
Wow Jono thank you for this most beautiful comment my friend. This is truly a remarkable reading of Vincent and I am thrilled that you feel that weave words around art. And thank you for making Vincent a favourite.
