This specific storm they call it Khamsin Derives from the Arabic for “fifty”. Some speculate that it blows around fifty days per year, but whether this is true or is the reason for the name is unsure.
khamsīn or khamseen is a Middle Eastern term for the dry, hot wind that blows in from the desert. It can refer to the wind that blows from the Sahara across Egypt in the spring, typically from March through May; or in Israel, for the easterly wind that brings dust from the Arabian desert to cities and oppressive pressure on the people.
Khamsin is usually limited to two seasons, between March and May, and between September and November.
This is how much I know. Hope someone else knows more.

This looks frightening!! But a truly amazing shot! The color makes it look dark and stormy. I am in awe of what a sand storm looks like and can do. I hope you were someplace safe, Antanas.

To Tom…..............about sand infiltrating the tiniest recesses of our equipment. While in Uluru (Ayer’s Rock) last July I went on an expedition into the desert. July here in OZ is Winter so it was not only below freezing early morning terrific winds were blowing. Not as dramatic as this photo but close….......my new camera became obsolete within minutes. I could have cried, in fact I think I did. :-) Same Red earth, gets into your eyes and ears nose and if you open your mouth there as well ha ha ha. Mother Nature sometimes speaks with fury.
