Kittiwake Wreck - Artificial Reef Celebrates Its First Birthday by

“An artfully executed shipwreck project”… Stephen Frink succinctly sums up the Kittiwake on Grand Cayman in his article Celebrating a Cayman Shipwreck Success. It’s been such a hit, that about 20,000 divers have visited within its first year. On a personal note, I’ve not been a fan of wreck diving, but purpose-sunk wrecks seem different to me… kind of like exploring a bit of history in a weightless state. And then there is the artificial reef aspect… schools of fish, corals, sponges, surprises at many a corner or hiding hole, all in the context of the visually interesting lines of the sunken vessel. Canon G12, ISO 320, f8, 1/18, RAW, Ikelite housing.

It would be interesting to see serial shots annually.

What an adventure this would be. How deep was this?

  • Hi vigor, the wheelhouse sticks up to a relatively shallow 20 feet depth; and the rudder is at about 60 feet. We just did a dive around it, but there is also a guided tour through the sunken ship!
