The Ramshorn presides over a beautiful valley just west of Dubois, Wyoming, USA. How delightful of these blacktail does to pause in the soft evening light! Technically they are mule deer, but locally they are known as blacktail deer to differentiate them from the white tail deer that overlap in this part of the state. Notice how sparse the snow cover was in March during a year when Jackson Hole (two hours drive to the west) was having a record snowfall of over 600 inches / 15.24 meters… the Ramshorn is in a decidedly warmer part of Wyoming. Canon 7D, f10, 1/640, ISO500, focal length 100mm (nice!), RAW. Views 700, favorites 42 as of 9 January 2012.

For some history of the Ramshorn region, visit the website for The Ramshorn Guest Ranch. The area used to be the site of the largest tie hack industry in the US between about 1920 and 1946… trees were hand hewn into railroad ties, then floated down the Wind River to Riverton, Wy. The tie hacks doing this demanding work were mostly Scandinavian.
