When the winds aloft bounce over the Tetons in just the right way, wave or lenticular clouds form… to my delight as both a glider pilot and a photographer. The lens shaped wave cloud marks the spot where the air mass moving across the Tetons reaches the top of its bounce and begins down again. Think of ripples that occur downstream of a rock in a stream… the standing wave cloud in this photo is hovering over the top of the first of the ripples. The hill in the foreground is Hansen Peak named after Senator Cliff Hansen, a great man and statesman who passed away in late 2009 (click here for an interview).
