Variable oystercatcher (Haematopus unicolor) sunning on the inviting beaches of Golden Bay, top of the south, New Zealand. This handsome shorebird would kept its left leg tucked and hop forward a few steps if I crept a tiny bit too close, then cast a glance over its shoulder before going back to snoozing. Canon 50D, f13, 1/400, focal length 400mm, ISO400.

What a show off. I wish I could stand on one leg like that! (lol):)

  • :-))), me too, and hop around on just one without even thinking about dropping the other! I know this bird has two good legs, but it sure didn’t need them both. Happy Boxing Day, Ann!

Oystercatchers are one of my favorite shorebirds, from their elegant black plumage and big bright red bills to their cheery peeping calls heard over the sound of surf. Lovely work. I also like the low to the ground point of view, more or less from an oystercatcher’s perspective.

  • :-), groveling for a shot! Happy Boxing Day, whalegeek!
