Moose Bull & Calf, Fall Colors
Most of the year the calves live with their mothers away from the bulls; in the late fall the calves encounter the bulls when the rut is on. What could the calf be thinking in this image…”Wow, will I grow up to look like you”? They must experience a tug of war; they want to stay near their mothers, but this huge bull is moving into their lives. In the end, the calves watch the bulls warily and try to stay out of their way.

Fantastic capture…I’m in awe…(again)
A.M. Ruttle replied
Hi Karen, thanks so much for your great comment :-)! Love your “Winter promise”!!
Peter Denness
Really great shot, a bit of colour noise reduction might be helpful in the dark areas, I’m guessing a high ISO was necessary? A favourite definitely
A.M. Ruttle replied
You are so right, Peter! I tried addressing this a few times and only made it worse; will have to take another stab at it when we are back home after some work travel.
Martin Smart
Very nice shot A.M, love the colours and the interaction between bull and calf.
A.M. Ruttle replied
Thanks so much for stopping by, Martin! Wow, I couldn’t even imagine that a bear would go for a starfish (your great shot), but why not eh?

He is magnificent!

This is a sensational shot. How awesome for you to see this beautiful Bull Moose. It is a rare encounter and I absolutely love your wonderful story. It is so wonderful to see the calf near the Bull in the wild. It is a fantastic shot.
A.M. Ruttle replied
Thanks so much, Sharon; I’ve been a little sheepish about this shot because the blacks have a bit too much noise as Peter Denness noticed, but I like it so much I finally posted it. You are SO great to feature it!!!

Gorgeous shot and such a beautiful rack! Calves aren’t the only ones to watch warily and try to stay out of the way. Although I’d love to capture a shot like this again – with a good lens and dslr. Great work.
A.M. Ruttle replied
Hi Jan, you know for sure about keeping out of the bull’s way! Thanks so much for stopping by!

HI Donna, thanks so much! Looks like you had fun watching the horses horsing around with the water!
Linda Sparks
Gorgeous shot. You must have a heck of a lens. Living in the mountains, I’ve gotten pretty close to the bulls, but only in the summer when they are laid back.
A.M. Ruttle replied
Hi Linda, Thanks so much for the “gorgeous”! This is a 100-400 IS lens, my fave.
