Artist's Description

This is a croquille pen and brush drawing on 3 ply strathmore illustration board. It is drawn in sepia ink with a streak of opaque white. For a view of the original and a chance to purchase it, see

Makhpiya-luta, Red Cloud is one of the people I most admire. He was a Naitve American and sacrificed much for his people. There is alot of emotion here. He was blind and felt a broken man at this time in his life.

“My sun is set. My day is done. Darkness is stealing over me. Before I lie down to rise no more, I will speak to my people.” July 4, 1903. Read the rest here

I drew it while at the Boston Public Library. I was listening with headphones to music from the Library of Congress recordings. It may have been from Red Cloud’s nation, or another branch of the Teton. In any case, there was a vibe with the drum and voices.
