My nightly visitors

They come to me
in the small hours of the night
every night
they promptly appear

They wake me
from my sweet slumber
these wily thieves, coming
to steal away my precious sleep

Like the 2am feed
of an infant, newborn
insistently bemoaning his need
seeking the nourishing breast of his fatigued, but devoted mother

Like the relentless lust of a lover
nudging, desperately seeking
affectionate attentions
before silently sliding back into his own dreams

Like a sick toddler, consumed with fever
softly crying
by the bedside at 3am
begging for a healing touch, motherly cuddle and a soft lullaby

Like the faithful family dog
whimpering at the door around 5am
wishing to escape his confines
to wander the yard, relieve his need, keep his family safe

Yes, so they keep coming to me
in the still of the night
every night
urgently whispering their pleas to be freed

I shall rise to tend them
diligently, lovingly in the small of the night
I carefully secure them on soft sheets of tissue
these fragile words that feed my soul

For once they’ve departed,
left the sanctuary of my thoughts
they may not ever return, as they fare forth
in their quest to wake, from sweet slumber, yet another.
