Waiting to be buried

She stands still erect amongst the ever-encroaching dunes
But not quite as proud as a few decades before
Now broken, beaten and brutally worn
The gracious, glorious grand dame she used to be

once…

She was so very beautiful, even magnificent
For he had lovingly created her, made her just so
He dressed her in expensive imported treasures
The kinds only diamond money could afford

once…

She was the core of his beating heart
She was subtly imposing and quietly impressive
She offered sheer comfort when he needed her most
She offered shelter for his weary body, a rest for his tired mind

once…

She was his place of pride and exuberant joy
She harbored his every need, witnessed his every emotion
She cuddled him in precious and luxurious comforts
Of her opulently plush and richly decorated confines

once…

She was cherished, loved and carefully tended
She was admired and lavishly decorated
She was a haven from the elements to those who came for riches
She was this, in a time when diamonds were abundantly picked up from the sand

once…

Now she stands, barely being, solemnly grieving
Shameful testimony of his race for riches, his unwavering greed
Lonesome, forlorn in utter decay and complete desertion
Waiting, hoping to be resurrected, rescued, wanted

now…

A mere skeleton of her former regal, glorious self
She waits patiently for acknowledgement, possibly some healing
While others around her had already succumbed
To the harsh realities of their desperate existence

now…

She stands exposed in the searing, sweltering heat
Of the merciless, scorching African sun
Waiting for the next unrelenting, suffocating onslaught
Rushing forth in violent easterly winds, driving blasting sandstorms

now…

She waits, unabatedly, for the inevitable finality
The undeniable, undignified drowning of her once noble body
To be consumed by these defiant desert dunes
As they move swiftly, silently into her once sacred spaces

now…

Slowly but surely the extreme effects of the notorious Namib
Takes its unyielding toll, stripping her bare, naked to the bone
Devouring her defenses, eroding her once dignified facade
The fine, hot seeping sand, invading her every secret crevice

soon…

She will never again be anything but a buried ruin
And the dunes will reclaim what is rightfully theirs
She will be completely swallowed by the shifting sands
She will be just another forgotten treasure in a sandy desert grave

soon…

In just a few more years she will be nothing but the faintest memory
Lost in the eerie existence of a former diamond town turned ghost dwelling
For this tiny, godforsaken place called Kolmanskop
Will be a place entombed in the desolate vastness of Southern Namibia

Too soon
