Everlastin' Glory

Everlastin' Glory

My friend Randy has been blessed to make a living as a cowboy. A hobby that has turned into much more is reciting cowboy poetry at gatherings near and far. This poem is on his first album. I can almost hear his melodic voice now…

Ridin’
by Charles Badger Clark

There is some that like the city – Grass that’s curried smooth and green,
Theaytres and stranglin’ collars, Wagons run by gasoline -
But for me it’s hawse and saddle Every day without a change,
And a desert sun a-blazin’ On a hundred miles of range.

Just a-ridin’, a-ridin’ – Desert Ripplin’ in the sun,
Mountains blue along the skyline -
I don’t envy anyone When I’m ridin’.

When my feet is in the stirrups And my hawse is on the bust,
With his hoofs a-flashin’ lightnin’ From a cloud of golden dust,
And the bawlin’ of the cattle Is a-comin’ down the wind
Then a finer life than ridin’ Would be mighty hard to find.

Just a-ridin’, a-ridin’ Splittin’ long cracks through the air,
Stirrin’ up a baby cyclone, Rippin’ up the prickly pear
As I’m ridin’.

I don’t need no art exhibits When the sunset does her best,
Paintin’ everlastin’ glory On the mountains to the west
And your opery looks foolist When the night-bird starts his tune
And the desert’s silver mounted By the touches of the moon.

Just a-ridin’, a-ridin’, Who kin envy kings and czars
When the coyotes down the valley Are a-singin’ to the stars,
If he’s ridin’?

When my earthly trail is ended And my final bacon curled
And the last great roundup’s finished At the Home Ranch of the world
I don’t want no harps nor haloes, Robes nor other dressed up things -
Let me ride the starry ranges On a pinto hawse with wings!

Just a-ridin’, a-ridin’- Nothin’ I’d like half so well
As a-rounin’ up the sinners That have wandered out of Hell,
And a-ridin’.

It must be a wonderful life working on this beautiful ranch, you placed him perfectly in the scene, excellent work,
    Regards, Rod.

  • Ann Rodriquez replied

Thanks, Rod. I’m sure it comes with its share of hard work and tough times, but yes, I’m sure it also is a wonderful life!

This shot would make a great postcard for that area. It’s instantly appealing, it has a great focal point in the man and horses, and it shows a huge span of the countryside. Great shot. What I don’t understand is how, and maybe why, anyone can try to have livestock on that arid land! :)

  • Ann Rodriquez replied

Thanks, Ted! I actually hope to sell some prints/cards, etc. to guests who stay at the ranch and this is one of my top picks for possibilities! Go figure. Our great minds think alike.

Re: cattle…somehow, it works! They don’t stay in one spot for long, but it works! : )

Very nice Ann, I can almost see why you’re ready to move back out there.

  • Ann Rodriquez replied

: ) Yes, it’s a beautiful state, for sure…and has so much variety in landscape.

Yea, but I’d worry about tornadoes, brush fires, all that stuff, but I guess you can’t, you just live life and trust in the Lord. Um, kinda like we do back here:)

  • Ann Rodriquez replied

LOL – yup, you’re right. Just like here. A different set of life obstacles, but it’s the same God we trust!

(oh, and you might get hit by tumbleweeds, but tornadoes don’t make it over the mountains…no concerns there!) : )

    Great photo and poem!

  • Ann Rodriquez replied

Thanks, Amy. I was hoping someone would particularly like the poem. : ) It’s one of my favorites, especially as I can hear in my head Randy’s recital of it. : )

What a magical place! View seems to go on forever….
Is this the region that you live in? Amazing.
    It’s a fabulous shot.

  • Ann Rodriquez replied

Well, Rosemary, I live in PA, the east side of the U.S., but grew up in Montana, the west side of the U.S. This is actually about a 3 hour drive east from where my family lives (in Montana). It’s very different than where my family lives…my family lives in the valley and has more green as the river runs through. This is more sagebrush and rolling hills. Both are certainly beautiful though! Glad you like this shot…it’s one of my favorites of the 947 I took during our recent trip ‘home.’ : )

Oh what an awesome shot!!! This would look awesome in black and white too, beautiful capture!!

    Mammalia

  • Ann Rodriquez replied

Thank you, Mammalia! I tried it in B&W, but somehow wasn’t able to get the contrast right…it just didn’t POP like the color version does. Great suggestion though! Thanks!

To be honest, I think this would look better just as color anyway, wonderful moment you captured Ann…one in a million!!!

  • Ann Rodriquez replied

I guess that’s what happens when you spend three days on a ranch, going nowhere with your camera. ; ) You get the shots that are everyday yet spectacular by very nature. Gotta love cameras! Thanks for the dialogue, I’ve enjoyed it!

Wow, what a great look you give us into Randy’s life as a cowboy, loved the point that he needs no art exhibits because the sunsets does its best. This is very down to earth and real. And the photo of the lone man with his horses is priceless. A pleasure to read and see. – Cora

  • Ann Rodriquez replied

Thanks, Cora. Yes, REAL is a great word to describe it. Ordinary life, made extraordinary by being in the right place at the right time with nice lighting. : ) Thanks for taking the time to read the poem – it’s a good one!

Thank you for sharing a beautiful scene with us!! I live in cowboy country in southern Alberta, and this quite simply, is home.

  • Ann Rodriquez replied

I’m so glad to share something that brings the warm fuzzy feelings of ‘home.’ : ) There’s something about it that just represents more than those who have never lived there will know, isn’t there? Thanks for the comment!
