Precious Things

There was the piece of rose quartz
Embedded in a green velvet box
Tales of a school camp
Amongst waterfalls in Wales.

A cotton hanky
Edged with lace
Heavy with Hypnotique perfume
Specially for parties

Sepia prints
Of distant family
Who were nameless
Sitting on stony beaches
Wearing cloche hats
With seaweed smiles

Fine nylon stockings
Immaculately folded
Caressed in tissue
Enveloped in cellophane
Unworn

Felt flowers
Carefully crafted
By artistic hands
That died too young
Purple, green and blue.

Housed in a backless dresser
Made in wartime
It had heard the bombs
Been rocked by them.
No fancy antiques
Snapshots in time.

Artist's Description

When I was very small, maybe 4 or 5 years old I would sometimes sit with my mother in her bedroom and she would pull out one of the large drawers of her dresser and show me some of the contents.
I loved this. Each little thing had a story associated with it. They live on in my memory and I dedicate this poem to my dear mum who died 10 years ago.
Thanks mum for being such a kind person, giving me a childhood in which I knew I was loved and showing me the delights of painting.
