I was given the number ‘7’ to illustrate.
My braining was buzzing with when I had to think of an image for this.

I also considered :

Seven slimy soporific salamanders sunbathing on sepia sand.

Seahorses won out though as they have always fascinated me since I was a child. They seem somehow magical creatures; tiny fin propelled underwater horses, friends of mermaids.

The smallest species Hippocampus denise are only 16 millimetres long!

I was saddened to read that they are an endangered species. Over 20 million of the poor little things are taken from the sea each year to be used in Asian medicine.

The wee creatures mate for life and are monogamous. If they become widowed they wait sometime before finding another partner.

The males also become pregnant and have the babies!

Hand drawn and coloured using watercolour and coloured pencils (also ink) on Bockingford watercolour paper.

Wonderful Anni- I LOVE seahorses, so delighted you picked them and just perfect !!!!
I was up at your old place last weekend- Midmar. I visited a Country Centre, Millars which has apparently been there for “donkey’s years” according to my Aunt. It was a real discovery, 4 star restaurant and beautiful gift shopping with space for local artists too. It was sooooooooo busy, obviously a favourite with the country folks. Its a long shot, but I thought you might know it, if it was there many years ago. It’s firmly on our Sunday run list now xxx

  • Hi Anita, Glad the seahorses are ok :)
I visited Midmar many years ago, took the train up from Kings Cross, London to visit some friends who live there in an old granite cottage. It was a January and the wind was bitter and fierce (I could lean into it and I was keep up straight by its strength!!!).
I can’t remember Millars being there when I visited…but that WAS donkey’s years ago (must be just over 20!!!!). I’ve just had a look at their website, looks a great place to visit, I got hungry looking at their menus and interesting place to shopthey have a website: http://www.millersmidmar.co.uk
Glad you’ve found it :) ~ Anni xxx
