Earthquake in Christchurch, New Zealand today.
Today has been a very sad day for the people of Christchurch and New Zealand. At lunchtime today – 1.51pm an earthquake hit the central business district of Christchurch and at the moment the death toll is at 65 but there are indications that it will rise. Some people are still believed to be trapped in buildings. It was a 6.3 magnitude quake and very shallow, at only 5 km deep.

Ramblings from the Faraway Palette....The Lazy, Hazy Days of Summer
After a very slow start to our Kiwi summer way down south here in Dunedin, I can announce it did finally arrive. The last three weeks have been sunny and hot, with acres of blue sky.
Things at Owl Cottage have been blooming well. Earlier in February the old plum tree in the front garden put on an amazing show of small red plums. The branches were weighed down with them and after giving some away …

Here we are in December, so I thought I should bring you up to speed.
Our summer way down south here in New Zealand has been very slow to take off. The tomato plants are yet to make much growth but the strawberries are doing well and lots of roses out in full bloom.

Spring has sprung downhere in the South Island of New Zealand. There has been a very impressive display of blossom from various trees: cherries, plums, magnolias and camellias.
Dunedin holds a Rhododendron Festival each year and this year …
