Sweet Tooth

As a child I have fond memories of eating Jelly Babies when I lived in England. I later found out that they were originally known as Peace Babies. Jelly Babies were launched 75 Years ago by Bassett’s – one of Britain’s oldest sweets manufacturers – to celebrate the end of the first world war.

Peace Babies were popular between the wars, but production ceased in the Second World War because of a shortage of raw materials. They came back in 1953, renamed Jelly Babies.

I thought I’ll paint some of the famous Bertie Basset’s liquorice allsorts too,,,I use to love the black jelly ones with thousands and thousands on them.

Oh the memories of childhood :)

I used to dream in images like this as a child-Bassets Licorice Alsorts(gorgous)
sadly I did not retain that magic as you have-beautiful dreamer

I just love paintings that stir memories.This one reminds me of when sweets were on ration, a long time ago…I went to our local shop to buy sweets and the lady said sorry you have not got enough coupons.So i started to cry and my mother said you are to old to cry.I was only about 30 at the time.sorry for rambling on.Regards Bertie

Just slowly working my way through…..the work not the sweets. Mind you i have always been a sweet addict! Every Friday my Mum used to do the weekly shopping and ‘always’ brought me home one of those sherbert dabs… with the licorice straw (which i could never suck anything up with and just pulled it out) and in the evening i would go and meet my Dad from work He worked in a foundry in Bow and came home covered in muck but never missed out on getting me a packet of licorice allsorts….... memories agian…thanks

Hee…hee…sweetshop memories. I was partial to pear drops and aniseed balls myself. I do remember those sherbert dabs…think Barretts used to make them. There were also: Trebor’s Refreshers, Love Hearts, Coconut Mushrooms, Dolly Mistures, Wine Gums, Spangles….and so many more.

Good memory Anni, but looking back over this painting I don’t know why I am surprised!!
It was indeed Barrett’s and those coconut mushrooms were a winner. You can still buy them but they’re not the same ….. i guess nothing ever is….. Refresher’s!! Oh Yes…... I liked the green ones….(I’ll let you get back to work now while i nip out to the dairy)..........
