Playing Footsie

Watercolour on Bockingford watercolour paper

As we are stuck in the depths of winter down here in New Zealand, I thought it might be good to choose something to paint that’s funny, to lift the spirit. So I have come up with a painting called ‘Playing Footsie’.

Have you ever played it? It is an intimate game, basically a way of flirting silently without other people noticing (like an inside joke, but better). Be warned, it is best played with someone you really like and likes you back. Be gentle and don’t kick the other person by accident or it could have the reverse effect

I thought it was time to try out some watercolour pencils I had bought last month. They were secondhand (unused) bought from a auction site. They are Faber Castell Albrecht Durer, a tin of 12. I used Bockingford watercolour paper for this painting.

Hey, thanks Karin. I was playing around with watercolour today, as I bought some recently and wanted to have a go. Makes a change from acrylics. Had no models so had to relie on my imagination (not that reliable) :)) ~ Anni

Oh, it is real fun relying on the imagination! And the result shows that you don’t really need a model for such details, either – you do have them inside. Like the idea and the slight humor…

  • Anni Morris replied

Hi Gili, I relied on my imagination once and gave a woman 6 fingers in one of my paintings. I didn’t realise it for ages :) Yes, where would we be without some imagination, life would be rather dull.

;-) I do all kinds of strange things in my drawings, twisting proportions and letting show what may seem ugly to people, but is part of being human. Well, no model complained so far, besides one lover who thought she was the inspiration for a drawing… But I do consider painting from photos, did excercise it a bit with pastels.

A very cool and fun composition, and the ‘footsie’ instigator’s shoes are just fabulous! :-)

  • Anni Morris replied

Thanks Lumineux…I do like painting shoes, have platforms and stilettos in my portfolio. This painting was for a fortnightly art challenge the theme was ‘communication’. I thought this
was a fun, non verbal mode of communication. I bought a pink alligator (not real) pair of stilettos at an opportunity shop last year, they are amazing…they came in useful as a prop for this artwork. Cheers ~ Anni

    What a fine idea!!
I remember when i left school a group of us would always meet up and go for dinner or a drink and there was one girl (who was a good friend of mine) but always wanted to play “footsie”............ hey I loved it. funny thing was the years went by and one time on a trip over to the U.K., I met up with her and her husband (also a mate…. in fact i introduced them) and we got a few of our old friends together and out we all went. At the resurant she ended up opposite me and blow me if we didn’t play foootsie the entire meal!!! Thanks for the trip down memory lane. love your work!

    Beneath the table lies
    The truth behind our eyes
    Our gazes demonstrate
For what our feet just cannot wait
They brush and touch and thrill
‘Till I beg the waiter for the bill!

  • Anni Morris replied

    The stylish stiletto
    Meets the leather brogue
    ..whatever is in vogue.
    Perfect partners at play
    At a formal dinner party
    Or quick lunch at midday

    ~ Anni
