Keeper of Secrets
Amazingly there are 20 species of Magpie in the world. Not quite sure which I have painted here… looks more like an Australian magpie Many people consider them superstitious, they certainly have their place in folklore, some believe they bring good luck, others believe bad. I remember being played Rossini’s Thriving Magpie when I was quite young; it is said they have a panache for shiny, silvery things which they like to steal and hide.
Here the magpie has found a key! I wonder where it came from? I see him as a ‘Keeper of Secrets’.
The selected text comes from a traditional rhyme I was told as a child:
One for sorrow, Two for joy,
Three for a girl, Four for a boy,
Five for Silver, Six for Gold
Seven for a secret never to be told
This is an acrylic painting on canvas.

Anni,Balck and white gives the meaning of good and bad luck. The colorful background shining every where in our live.Well done.
Anni Morris replied
Thanks Hosny, People read their own meanings into art son’t they? The black and white of the bird was also a complete contrast to the colourful background. I was hoping for a sense of depth when the painting was viewed..

The thieving magpie but I always think of Crows with this lol…..
Anni Morris
Hi Bob, I think the European magpie does come from the crow family (Corvidae)...so you are on the right track.
JACQUE LEE
I love this picture Anni, and to me the Magpie means , love, nurture, Mother. After my mum died and we went to her favorite place to scatter her ashes, on my way there I had this overwhelming feeling that she would show herself as a bird, and allthough there was lots of birdsong before the scattering at the actual time it became silent and walking around the peramiter of the area was a Magpie. S to me they are special ,precious ,MUM.
Anni Morris
Hello Jacque, I agree with you…I have a knowing about birds too and believe that they are messengers…and open doorways to spirit. So pleased that this painting reminds you of your dear Mum :)

Leena Hedman
I love magpies! When I visit my parent’s house and sleep in my old bedroom, magpie-mom with babies wake me up at 5 am. ( I wonder if it is the same family each year..??)They are noisy and funny and leave presents behind – shiny, long feathers that I take with me when I leave. Teh magpies also dance on the neighbor’s tin roof…lovely metallic tap-dances. Anyway, I LOVE your art piece!!!!
Anni Morris replied
Leena, thank you so much for such a lovely comment and background.
