Minolta 500mm f8 Reflex Lens - any tips? by Anne-Marie Ladegaard

Posted on September 07, 2010

A good friend of ours has just given me all his old Minolta gear including 3 old SLR bodies and various lenses, including the magnificent 500mm Reflex lens and a 2X Teleconverter! Pretty chuffed! Now I have to learn how to get the best from the Reflex – I believe using an ISO of 200 or 400 and shutter speed of around 1/500 will get me the best shots. Any other suggestions?

I hope to get a chance to get some proper photos over the weekend – will upload if they are any good!!

Oh congratulations Anne-Marie. I used to love my old 500 mirror (it was the AF version) it was one of the sold-off casualties when I moved to digital. It was so lightweight and compact.

You by now have probably realised that the lens is a fixed aperture so you’ll be adjusting the ISO upwards to keep the shutter speed high-ish. Other than that have fun and enjoy.

Hi John – thanks for your feedback. :) Mine is also an AF – in fact, exactly the same as the current one made by Sony, I believe.

Would you agree with my above settings then? I’ll have to play around a bit with various settings to find what suits best! :)
