St. Michael’s Arcade, Grosvenor Shopping Centre, Chester, UK
The nave of Chester’s retail cathedral.
The arcade of twenty shops was designed by W.T.Lockwood for the second Duke of Westminster and built 1909-11. Now Grade II* Listed, it forms the genteel Bridge Street Row entrance to the 1960s-brutalist Grosvenor Precinct. The contrast between this airy atrium, lit well by natural daylight and lined by restrained shopfronts, and the Precinct’s dim tunnels, primarily lit by garish signs, is acute.
