Eve, the symbol of woman, portrayed here as she is seen through the eyes of the church.

Eve is associated with sin, with seduction, with serpents, with temptation and with the whole concept of paradise lost. Perhaps it is not surprising, given this portrayal of woman over centuries, that women are seen as inferior and/or ‘dangerous’ beings.

It’s frequently the case that religions treat women as inferior to men – women have been denied leadership roles, they are told to be submissive, and religious doctrines are used to control them both in society and the family.

Most religions tend to accord women a lower social, spiritual, and moral status than men. This is surely just a reflection of common social and political beliefs, but unfortunately religion lends divine or transcendental weight to common human prejudices. Overcoming these prejudices thus requires overcoming traditional religious beliefs as well.
