Losing foot
On rocky shore
Deeper, deeper
Treading water.
Flailing arms
And swallowed brine
Tasting the salty
Knowledge of failure

Seaweed strangling
Entangling heavy arms
The water’s deep
And dark – my tomb.

Struggling for air
Oh God save me!
Ocean oppressing
And life flashing by
My sins,
My love,
My loss,
My fear.

Could it be you’d
Rescue me?
Pull me to the shore
Breathe new life into me
or
Leave me going under.

And so it seems
It is to be:

I take my last and final breath
Arms and legs outstretched
I float like a star in Heaven
….Dead

And the seagulls squawk
And the fish keep swimming
Life goes on and I am
….Dead.
