Profile

Exhibiting digital artist & animator

I don’t like wrting about myself much so I’ve put in an artist review which pretty much says what I do, or am, or something hahahaha. I think some of the examples of my art and writing say it better, after all that’s why I am an artist not a clickable ‘personality’ or some such something. hahaha anyway…enjoy!

An Artists Review:
Biography by Helen McIntosh – Artists Reviewer, London. UK. 2000

Andrew is an Artist/Director/Writer and University Lecturer. His artwork, animation, printmaking and video productions display a unique and highly creative approach with strong leanings to surrealism and a profound interest in the relationship between form, time, light and perception. His art is vivant, challenging and engaging, communicating a deep perception of the human state and spirit. Andrew has been working in digital media since the early 80’s and is a specialist in digital video techniques, 3D animation, special effects, printmaking and design.

“I enjoy the challenges and opportunities of new media techniques and spend much of my time exploring and experimenting with new ways to represent my creative processes, symbolism and ideas. I am excited by the ability to combine traditional techniques with animation and modern printmaking to allow the chance to present ideas that can exist as still images, in motion and through time.”

Much of Andrew’s work challenges the viewer to engage with the image content and composition through his use of stark symbols, a reliance on strong sculptural forms, bold colour variations, primals and textures. At times it can seem almost too stark, geometric or defined but he seems to use this as a mask or filter to eliminate anything that prevents the opportunity to see beyond the canvas to another time, place and connection to alternative perceptions of the human experience. This isn’t to say his work lacks subtlety, on the contrary, his use of light is soft, etheric and enchanting.

It’s as if the work itself is simply one small articulated window from a fragile 4 dimensional canvas that can only be hinted at. His use of light and motion in his animated pieces are often more refined than the image or view itself, suggesting a more delicate world or feeling that exists beyond the moment. His work often leaves the viewer with many after thoughts, strong impressions and a desire to explore his creative world a little deeper. It’s as if you may have recognised something in yourself through his work, a thought, an idea, a feeling, something hinted and personal and yet universal but still vague enough to want to re explore that place and space a little more.

Andrew is represented by Gallery 101 in Melbourne and Silicon Pulp in Sydney. His work is purchased within Australia, Europe and the USA.
