Legend of the Moon Rabbit

The Moon rabbit, also called the Jade Rabbit, is a rabbit that lives on the moon in East Asian folklore. The legends about the moon rabbit are based on the traditional pareidolia that identifies the markings of the moon as a rabbit pounding in a mortar. In Chinese folklore, it is often portrayed as a companion of the moon goddess Chang’e, constantly pounding the elixir of life for her; but in Japanese and Korean versions it is just pounding mochi.

the rabbit reminded me of Watership down….a book/animation…..there’s a story about the prince of rabbits…but it was the sun god Frith they spoke of in the story….still in the animation i remember the rabbit swirling around the sun….this is the story…...i hope you don’t mind Anita….but here :0)

Long ago, the great Frith made the world.
    He made all the stars…
... and the world lived among the stars.
Frith made all the animals and birds…
... and, at first, made them all the same.
Now, among the animals was El-ahrairah, the Prince of Rabbits.
    He had many friends…
... and they all ate grass together.
After a time, the rabbits wandered everywhere…
... multiplied, eating as they went.
    Then, Frith said to El-ahrairah:
“Prince Rabbit, if you cannot control your people…
”...I shall find ways to control them.”
El-ahrairah would not listen, and said to Frith:
“My people are the strongest in the world.”
This angered Frith, so he determined to get the better of El-ahrairah.
He gave a present to every animal and bird…
... making each one different from the rest.
When the fox came, and others like the dog and cat…
    ... the hawk and weasel…
... to each of them, Frith gave a desire to hunt and slay the children of El-ahrairah.
El-ahrairah knew that Frith was too clever for him, and he was frightened.
He had never before seen the Black Rabbit of Death.
“My friend,” said Frith, “have you seen El-ahrairah?
“For I wish to give him a gift.”
“No, I have not seen him.”
So, Frith said, “Come out, and I will bless you instead.”
“No, I cannot. I am busy. The fox and weasel are coming.
“If you want to bless me, you will have to bless my bottom. ”
    “Very well. Be it so.”
And El-ahrairah’s tail grew shining white, and it flashed like a star.
And his back legs grew long and powerful.
He tore across the hill faster than any creature in the world.
“All the world will be your enemy, Prince with a Thousand Enemies.
“And whenever they catch you, they will kill you.
“But first, they must catch you…
    ”...digger, listener, runner.
    “Prince with the swift warren.
“Be cunning and full of tricks…
”...and your people will never be destroyed. “

  • AnitaInverarity replied

Awwww Thank you so much LT- Thats exactly what my partner Phil said- its the Watership Down Rabbit, when he saw it. That animation made such an impact on me when I saw it whilst very young, quite dark in places. I even did a choreography to “Bright Eyes” in my dance class at around 12 years.
Its funny how things stay in your subconscious only to resurface later in some form. Thank you so much for reminding me and for this beautiful, beautiful story- so wonderful and inspiring :))))) xxxx

Love this little angel and I really like the Rabbit in the moon. I dont get the man in the moon and the rabbit. I have never seen either. Wish I had a drawing of what I’m supposed to see so I could compare it to the real moon and finally see what everyone else says they see.

  • AnitaInverarity replied

Thank you. I sometimes can see a face in the moon, but it always looks more feminine with full lips to me- maybe its Diana I see.
Not ever seen a Bunny, but I sure like the idea :)))) I’ll see if I can google, maybe find some pics xxx

sombody is really into watership down did you ever read his follow up book cant remember the title it was about a mythical bear read it so long ago now she is lovely and a wonderfull concept so pleased somthing i did led to this lovely piece which in the end is somthing entirly of itself isnt it amazing all over the world each different culture has a history of unifiying spiritual belief with animals so sad that we have lost that spiritual conection

  • AnitaInverarity replied

Thank you Don and thank you so much for triggering off my inspiration. I love how a lot of ancient myths are steeped in Animal Lore, particularly Native American- speaking of bears, I have a few pieces of NA jewellery with the sylised bear image- I’m very drawn to. Not heard of the follow up book to WD, I must look it up- I wasnt thinking of WD when I did the piece, but totally see the connection when LT mentioned it.
We could learn a lot by going back in time to those shamanic ways, when there was revery and respect for the animal kingdom and we only took what we could give back xxxx

Wow! No wonder I never saw the rabbit in the moon. Someone has some real imagination or has been staring at the moon way too long! Thanks for finding that for me. Now, if it werent finally raining in San Antonio, I’d go out tonight and stare at the moon myself.

  • AnitaInverarity replied

Such a precious drawing… and I love the symbolism of the story! Thank you so much for sharing it!

(I love Watership Down too… I was blown away when I finally saw the movie, and that they kept it as dark as it is for an animated feature…the book is even more intense!)

  • AnitaInverarity replied

Thank you so much- Yes I remember being quite disturbed when I saw WD, having got past the childhood trauma- its a masterpiece !! Never read the book tho (dont know if I could go there- hee hee) xx
