Finally I’ve made a start on my Tarot Project
I would like to do the full deck but will be starting with
the Major Arcana (this will probably take me some years
to complete, but you have got to start somewhere)

I am deciding whether to do an all female tarot, whether this would work for divination purposes. As we all have male and female energies, I’m hoping to tap into this concept.
On completion, I will decide whether to add colour to the deck, again an important feature in representing energies and elements. I also need to think of a name for the Deck.
(Any feedback on these 3 ideas is most welcomed)

Each piece will be an artwork in its own right (with its art and tarot title). When the deck is complete, I will add borderings to make them into the cards.

My Inspirations will be Beauty, Nature, Modern Subculture meets Ancient Culture, My Dreams and Visions, The Devine Feminine

The Empress represents Motherhood and fertility, represented by the roses on her skirt and the soft invite of her petticoats. The crescent moon of her belt buckle represents, the waxing and waning of the moon and its links to fertility (the cycle of life).The cats are the children in this piece, in need of love, care and attention, but ultimately their own spirits and independant beings. The Empress has physical and spirtitual security, you can tell by her confident gaze she is mature and knowing. Loving and generous, she wears her heart on her sleeve and has one foot firmly in earthy matters and her spirit flying with Angels

I want to thank my good friend Paul for picking up on the Crescent Moon Belt Buckle, something I was unaware of, that emerged from the subconscious and makes so much sense in the piece.

    Whats the saying: Don’t wear your heart (or hearts) on your sleeve’ :o)
    Love the little mousey in the corner holding your ‘name tag’. Love the moggies with thier Mona Lisa expressions. Love her Leia hair-do, love the million and one filowers filling the scene.
    Her belt buckle looks ‘remarkably like a half moon’ – if I am not mistaken :o)

I did not notice the crescent moon belt buckle myself, I love that you have interpreted it as that, because it fits soooooo well with the meaning of this particular Tarot card. If you dont mind I’m going to add that to my description and I will give credit to you for that too.

    love it got the slight touch of the erotic about it with the one leg exposed i lovr the way your work switches from simple line to the complex detail an the cats are great another beautifull drawing looking foward to more an colour would be fantastic wish i could help with feedback but dont know enough about the subject

    awesome work, and what a great idea for a deck!
    i wouldn’t worry too much about your designs being literally male or female as long as you focus on representing equally the yin and yang energies. also what about doing some selective coloration on, perhaps, the major arcana cards? it would keep the same tone for the deck as a whole, but add an extra dimension for the principle cards…

I think that may be a very good compromise for me (being a bit colour phobic)- I was thinking a very limited palette, like the Ryder Waite Deck, but selective sounds great. I’m glad you think its possible to get the right balance just with female characters (that definately encourages me to keep going down that route).

    Fantastic Anita!! Norse goddess Freya in this?? I have plans to do a tarot deck too….a big project, somewhat daunting, so I haven’t yet begun!!
    I love this, but I think for cards, I would suggest using some colour, as it can be quite symbolic….although I have seen B&W decks that were lovely too!!

    Thank you so much. Not intentionally, but I see Freyja now you mention it (brilliant).
    Daunting is the word, starting such a big project, but I recommend going for it (after all we can take as long as we like).
    I agree about the colour being very important in the symbolism too, I’m thinking a limited pallette such a Ryder Waite or selective colouring. I’ll decide when they’re all done.

    Beautiful and original in concept Anita.
    Well… you have wished it to do it in monocolor.. a pity, for colour has got a lot of symbolism.
    But the Essence of it is right there..
    Youth… Extreme energy… Attatchment fo sexuality and the generating force of the Earth.
    This empress is much of a “Lolita” (you know the film?.... a teenage of sexual drives that are quite unconscious and devour like …. and seductive at the most.
    For the fun of it… driving very old men mad.
    The wings you have gifted her with speaks about her spirituality..but I must say that she is really earthly, and the wings are samll enough as to be a seductive tool , too.
    The way her hair is done remembers me to another sort of wings, telling me that her mind, intellect is flying up to her head… she seems to be quite spiritual or sexual but hers is a strong mind, with really stubborn decisions and ideas.
    Quite a ruler… like an Empress could be.

    The Artworks will be done in my signature B&W, but when I complete the deck I will be adding colour and borders (I think too much of the symbolism will be lost if I dont pursue that). I’m thinking selective coloring or limited pallette (like the Rider Waite deck).

As to your questions – I think you should go with how you feel about each card as you begin to draw – I know that sounds like a cope-out but it’s not meant to be – more a nod to your inner thoughts??

    Hi Hon- Sorry I’m finding it hard keeping up at the mo :))) Thanks for your emails on the book btw. I’m signing in when I get paid, it looks good. I think they’ll get it done sooner if they get more artists on board, so might go scouting a bit too.
    Thats great news on the oracle !!! Yaaaaaaaay. My deck will take years LOL. So funny I did my first one and I’ve sketched The Fool (hoping to ink it soon) but thats taken a month or so. Can you imagine hehehe. I’ll do the Majors first, you may be waiting a long time for the Minors. I wish I had your patience :)))) xxxx
