Looking out over this pristine view of golden wheat fields and the foothills of the blue ridge mountains in Gettysburg,Pa. USA reminded me of the lyrics from America the Beautiful. The Fourth of July will soon be here and the wheat fields are putting on their usual colorful show.

In 1893, at age 33, Katherine Lee Bates an English professor at Wellesly College traveled to Colorado to teach a summer session at Colorado College. The sights on the trip inspired her to write what would become America the Beautiful. Katharine Lee Bates originally wrote the words as a poem, Pikes Peak, first published in the Fourth of July edition of the church periodical The Congregationalist in 1895. At that time the poem was titled America for publication. The music was composed by church organist and choirmaster Samuel A. Ward.Ward’s music combined with the Bates poem was first published in 1910 and titled America the Beautiful. Ref: Wikipedia
