The swallowtail is one of the most familiar butterflies in the Eastern United States. It flies from spring to fall, producing 2-3 broods. Wingspan is 7.9-14cm. with the female being the larger sex. ref: Wikipedia
This fellow was perched in the very top of a small tree when I photographed him with wings spread out to warm himself in the sun as it was very early in the morning and still chilly. He sat this way for quite a while allowing me to get several shots for reference for my watercolor.
