Acquainted With the Night ~ Robert Frost

I have been one acquainted with the night,
I have walked out in rain-and back in rain,
I have outwalked the farthest city light,
I have looked down the saddest city lane,
I have passed by the watchman on his beat
And dropped my eyes, unwilling to explain.

I have stood still and stopped the sound of feet
When far away an interrupted cry
Came over houses from another street,

But not to call me back or say good-bye;
And further still at an unearthly height,
One luminary clock against the sky

Proclaimed the time was neither wrong nor right,
I have been one acquainted with the night.~Robert Frost

The Selenicereus is a long stemmed climbing cactus with pale cream colored fragrant flowers which open only at night and fade by early morning. They are now being cultivated for use in medicine for heart disorders.

9" by 12" watercolor, Strathmore 140# coldpress, Winsor and Newton watercolors

I am a photographer who loves to paint. Or, I am a painter who loves photography? No matter, they are very compatible! :) I really enjoy working in watercolor, and love the magical qualities that it can give to a work of art! You will see photography, watercolor and acrylic paintings on my bubble. Hope you enjoy! :)

Beautiful image Angie, and so lovely with Frost’s evocative words!

  • Thanks so much Chirs! I’m glad you enjoyed the Robert Frost poem too! At this time in my life, I can relate well to these words, not sleeping well and becoming a bit of a night owl. :)

Great work Angie Gorgeous Image and words

  • Thanks so much Maggie for the wonderful comment and favorite. I am taking “baby steps” here toward trying to work with a more wet watercolor. I generally like to keep it drier and more controlled. It is hard for me to just let it flow. I couldn’t sleep well last night, so a night blooming cactus seemed a good thing to paint. :)

not sure if i truly understand this Robert guy or not, but love the work you posted with it.

  • Robert Frost is one of my favorite poets. Being an insomniac a good deal of the time, I can relate to this poem quite well. Glad you liked the painting! :)

beautiful art. this flower reminds me of a similar flower known locally as Brahma kamala ‘Saussurea obvallata’ may be they are from the same family. wonderful work:)

  • Thank you so much Bharath! This is in the cactus family, but likes shady areas. Perhaps it is the same plant with a different name where you are.
