FEATURED IN ALL CREATURES GREAT AND SMALL 9/12/11
FEATURED IN IMAGE WRITING GROUP 12/12/1012" by 12" watercolor on Strathmore 140 # Coldpress, Winsor and Newton WatercolorsThe Downy Woodpecker, Picoides pubescens, is the smallest woodpecker in North America. Their breeding habitat is forested areas, mainly decidious, across most of North America to Central America. They nest in a tree cavity excavated by the nesting pair in a dead tree or limb. Downy woodpeckers mainly eat insects, seeds and berries. In winter, they can often be found in suburban neighborhoods feeding on suet at birdfeeders. (ref. Wikipedia)
I photographed this little fellow on my suet feeder this winter and was thrilled that he sat still long enough for me to capture him. The light was too dim in the photograph, but making “lemonade from lemons”, I enjoyed doing him as a watercolor.
