I’m very likely on the verge of self-imposing a ban on posting Macro-flower shots…however…I’ve been wanting to shoot some Passionflowers for the longest time. Their unique beauty intrigues me. I have been very fortunate that over the last couple of weeks, through the kindness of others, to have had 2 come my way.

Thanks to Rob Jenner for availing this one to me! (That’s a nice way of describing going into your neighbours yard while he was away isn’t it Rob?! At least your conscience kicked in and you called and asked first…I was a woman on a mission!)

Canon EOS 30D
Canon 100mm f/2.8 Macro Lens
f/4.5 ISO 100 Shutter Speed 4.5 sec

Entire flower approx. 6 cm in diameter…portion shown in image appox. 4 cm

any chance of getting a tiny bit of back light in there… otherwise very nice and sharp.
I thought it looked close to Rob’s, then i read on!
Also if you put a ban on yourself what would you do?
Maybe we should set you on some assignments….

  • Maybe you should Marcus…sometimes I work better under pressure. But then again, sometimes I don’t…

Angie, great use of DOF creates that softness in the foreground. I did the wedding shoot on the weekend and stopped mid shoot to snap one of these that was hanging over the fence, (Much to the amusement of the groom!!)

  • I would’ve done the same (not the Wedding thing…you can have that all to yourself…but stopped what I was doing to shoot one of these – absolutely!). They are such amazing looking flowers!

Angie im such a big fan of this shot! i love this flower, i tried to take on a year ago at my folks house but not even close to how good this is! This is really well thought out and composed, grea tlight and perfect focus! you’ve rocked the Passionflower!!!! yeeeeeeeeee ;)

  • Thanks you…I’m so glad you think so. It was surprisingly tricky to shoot…but fun too: so may different angles to play with because it has so many shapes and forms within it. Oh, and the Favourite is also mucho appreciated :)))

Very nicely done … I personally would have tried to get a little more fill light behing to bring out more of the purpley colour, but the shadow works well here to make the greens in the centre stand out. …

  • It seems you & Marcus are on the same page, and while I won’t disagree (you guys are better at this stuff than me!), if you look at Rob’s pics of flowers from the same vine…tho his taken in different conditions/light) you will see that our colours are pretty close. This, unlike the other Passionflower I’ve shot, was not overly vivid, and the colours in the shot are a pretty accurate representation, tho the green in this light seemed to ‘pop’ a little more, which I, like you, found pleasing. What I loved about this flower were the curly petals, so I composed and set my aperture to show their form, yet still have the stamen and purple colour be the focal point.

Hey Angie, just back for another look, im really loving this shot, the subtle way the light brings out the focus part is really great, the slightly darker background allows the green and purple to be shown off more. You are a pro round here with macros! keep em coming! :)

  • The Position of Angie’s Bestest Friend has now been filled :)))

(ok…so that actually happened a while ago…but I’m still thankful, for that and all the nice things you say, bru !)
