Living Post Mortem

Coffin:
a box
crafted so that I
might hide
within its satin lining
the thousands
of tiny candy hearts
I ever bought

for you
were taken from me
early
and inside
in a sugared heartbeat
an enigma

love
trapped within
this box
this coffin
of a black enamelled pain
that I buried

long ago
among the broken slabs
and headstones
that read
like a chronicle
of lost humanity
I saw you
naked

and dressed in tired black
we stood mourning
for the loss
of so many candy hearts
was too much

to bear
in my arms
for just another moment
dear God
and I shall
gather up
these broken roses

for you
can never look upon
and will never
ask
what it is like
living
post mortem
