'WHEN' and 'WHEN NOT TO' add a frame to a pic.

Hi Everyone

Wayne Holman, whose excellent work can be found at:

http://www.redbubble.com/people/wayneholman

made the following comment on my pix

http://www.redbubble.com/people/andyreeve/art/746983-1-laid-up

“I don’t think you need the frame though mate it’s good enough as it is…........”

Well that stopped me dead in my tracks.

After someone pointed out a while back that there is a range of frames in CS2 off I went like a madman adding them to most of my pics. Food for thought then following Wayne’s comment.

So I would appreciate it if we could start a discussion on this page about ‘when’ and ‘when not to’ add a frame. Would any one else care to add some definitions of their own?

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts.

Andy

Although I think a nice frame really makes a photo into a work of art, I don’t add frames to them when I put them up on here. However, I do put people’s photos in frames to view them. I think it’s obviously a personal choice, but if you add a frame to the photo that you upload, then it doesn’t look so good when you view it in the RB mounted prints etc.

Andy you’re better off using Red Bubbles frame / mounts etc. I’ll send you an email & explain how to do it.

I have never been a fan of adding permanent Digital framing on my photos.
it’s good to use to give an exapmle of how the photo will looked framed online however ,I think framing is such a very personal choice.
Especially if it’s something that’s going onto your wall. Some people like to have matching frames through out their whole house while someone I know has haphazard…some the same frames, some with none, some with random frames.

    Hopefully this will work.

Andy this is the mount that is supplied by Rb, this is how it will look to the customer, hence there is NO NEED to add any of your own frames!

OH!!!!!!!!!! I didn’t know that. So have I got to go thru all my pics deleting frames or will RB get the old Stanly knife out?

The way you add it is like this
When you upload your image ( photograph only) , view it in public profile after. Then pick white or black mount from right hand side.
COPY & PASTE this into your INFO part where you can describe your miage if you want to.
Once you’ve done that…............ it should then look like this

    http://images-2.redbubble.com/img/art/border:blackwithdetail/product:laminated-print/size:small/view:preview/413013-2-green-planet.jpg

Then at both ends of that coding add a ! ( exclamation mark)

It should then look like this

See the exclamation marks at both ends?

Right hit you’re SAVE & then go check to make sure everything is OK.

Do this with every photograph & you’ll stand a better chance of selling!

Hope all this emails. Any questions….....????

And thank you for doing that. It looks really good. I notice a lot of peeps display on the pages pix with that frame already in place. How can I do that/ where do I get it from?

You will need to delete & start again with all the pics you have added your own frames too!

I have looked at your portfolio and I think your pictures (or anyones come to that) look better with out adding frames, they do tend to distract from your art and like the lady above said Frames are such a personal choice.

Your main image in your profile will be frameless anyway, but the option is there to dispaly an example of what it will look like to the customer! the option is always there!

To frame or not to frame – that is the question…well personally I like to add redbubble black frames to my work and also show what a card coul look like too, in case anyone has a little money to spare and would like to purchase one

i havent been able to add frames until recently what i tend to do again this is just my preference is to upload photo as normally so that image is scene then add one in a frame from redbubble that way you get the best of both worlds i guess

Forestfriend, your information has been hugely helpful. I had no idea how to frame – so thank you! Another area that I would like to learn is how I can catergorise my art work on my profile. For example I have original oils, commercial design, and photography. As it stands all are jumbled into one. I feel it would look alot more organised and easier for the viewer to see if I were to place each in their own group. Do you know how to do this? If so, I would very much appreciate further help. In the meantime I will give your framing instructions a go (although I may try that a little later – it’s 4am here – couldn’t sleep!). So back to bed for me. Thank you for your kindness. MrsO.

Red Bubble do say don’t add frames when uploading a shot.

However as our good friend above says put a RB frame in after and a card as well.

Would you just tape a image on your wall at home. Framing and matting show off your work on the wall at home or on the net. I do art shows and matt and frame everything in black. Light colored matts are used mostly for art work as they tend to make the art float on the matt. Darker colors make the image appear to be behind and give a 3d effect of looking into the scene. (landscapes, sunsets, ect.) What I really like about the dark matts is that it makes the colors really pop.

    Hi Andy,

I think the only time that a pre made frame (in post production) wouldn’t work is on a Framed Print. You have the options of making an image available as a laminated print (example) and perhaps a frame added to the image in post production would work. Don’t throw ye olde baby out with the bath water :-)

I think frames are very necessary when you’re hanging a print but I think on a monitor screen it detracts from the actual image and when you think about it … it makes it smaller to view … just my thoughts but no I don’t like frames on images!

I started on RB by framing just to add a title and name in small print, though Ive dropped this since xmas, and now only do it by request – all it takes is a bubblemail, and the image can be changed easily – certainly sped up the workflow for me, and reduced the storage requirement by around 20%

Oh dear…I been told over and over not to frame it…Its all matter of the personal taste….i personaly like frames….nutz about it…i think photo without frame looks BARE and feels like something is missing…...However i was told that if i frame i will never be feautured on HOME page of RB…...hehhehehheh i am not published eaither way lol…

Some lucky people that are..its awsome …and its okay…i TOOTH MY OWN HORN that is enough no need for HOME PAGE lol….
Back to framing…i think for sales purposes work NEEDS no frames…..for GREAT LOOK
i would act as SIMON i would say go with it…lol

But WHAT IS WRONG WITH FRAMING?

When u enter artshow most works are framed NO????????
ofcourse they are….try selling without frame at the top notch artshows…..jurie woudnt even select u…u gota have your work framed…

Therefore i would say…..follow your instict and your heart Andy…...dont go for fame just to be published on home page ….lol

I have them both ways…..in my portofolio…..if redbubble think my work is good enough they woud publish it anyway …..that GLASSWINGS butterfly have so many coments that slows my computer down when i try to read last one…and ??????????
what happen…nothing….But u know what i respect more each coment i got on it then home page….because my friends appreciated what i do…framing or not…think so?
