Image was taken at the Mayday Rally in Melbourne.

This person is protesting the deaths in custody of a number of Aboriginals.

Australian Aboriginal deaths in custody has a long and sorry history. Many killing themselves, others have died as a result of mistreatment and neglect.

There is a current case making some news of a death on Palm Island. The aboriginal died after arrest from trauma type of injuries.

I don’t know enought about it to comment more than what I have done.

Maybe Aboriginal deaths in custody is one of those things that are ignored by wider society. This is because its not newsworthy. I dont know.

This guys protest had at least the effect of making me think about this matter and research it.

Some photos are great in black and white. This one has to be in color.

Love this Andrew, perfect photojounalism, it would look great in a magazine or newspaper, but I bet, due to subject, it will never see print, which is a shame…

  • Sadly I agree with you mate.

Its strange how some things in society are made a big thing of yet many other equally important things are not even mentioned.

Now that is an interesting looking face … so nice for him to pose for you. Also nice that you took notice of his sign. Not being from your area, my knowledge of how huge deaths in custody is for the Australian Aboriginal is limited, but I do remember seeing The Rabbit Proof Fence … where the government there was snatching half-caste children from their famlies and holding them in custody then making them servents or something, are you familiar?

  • Kids taken from their parents was a real problem in the past and is at the moment.

In fact more children are being taken away now than in the past. The reason being given now is the same as in the past its for the good of the kids.

I think its a shameful thing thats still happening. Mind you this current child protection hysteria is not limited to affecting Aboriginals.

This kind of protesting did eventually make a (some) difference over here because people, like you, spread the message. Powerful image!

  • Thanks Faul Im with you things change but it happens over time and not overnight.

The guys protesting, my picture and many other things all change things just a little. Until eventually we can see major changes happening.
