Back then it was two way traffic around the City Hall congestion was serious .. restricted these days to buses and deliveries. Ropbert Hoggs glass and china ware in the background, very old and famous Belfast retailer, sadly gone. No 83 Ormeau rd bus (Guy Warrior) which would have ran from the Shankill rd across town and up the Ormeau rd past the famous Ormeau bakery (why do you call your dog Soda?…‘Cause he’s well bred!) The City Hall is the centre of Belfast and all roads lead to it, making it very easy(?) to navigate around. The poles in the back ground carry overhead cables for trolley buses still in use to the sixties, indeed it was an adventure to travel on one for an Easter Monday trip to the Zoo up the Antrim road… and better still if a trolley poles came of the cables the bus stopped dead in the road and traffic backed up for the next 10 minuts untill the driver got a very long pole and manuovered it back onto the cable …always a source of fun and much banter!

  • Many thanks OGD. I knew it was somewhere round that neck of the woods! Indeed my now wife spent all her first hard-earned pay packets from RVH in Hoggs’ shop, stocking up her “bottom drawer”. I used to travel from Glengormley to school on those trolly buses down the Antrim road to Summerton road.

I’m liking these old shots, I think I told you before, it’s great that you’re reviving them by putting them here, love their coats and they seem very happy!

  • taken in rather more innocent days I think! Thank you Esther.
