The goldfinch (Carduelis carduelis) or European goldfinch is a common finch and year-round resident in Ireland. They feed on a variety of seeds, particularly thistle and teazel and consequently can often be seen on waste ground. The male and female adult birds are alike. Goldfinches rarely associates with other finch flocks.
