Sciacca’s fleet of fishing boats has set out to sea early in the morning. By mid-afternoon, the boats return one by one and the activity in the port at Sciacca becomes intense. The crew have already started to sort and pack the fish into boxes, small 3-wheeler ice trucks rush to each boat. The fish buyers are street traders, local restaurateurs and local fish processors and they crush around the boat the pier and start to bid for what they want, choosing from squid, prawns, sardines and many more varieties. With much humor, shouting, gesticulating, displays of anger and skillful negotiation each boat’s catch is snapped up and they huddle moves on to the next boat as it arrives.
