First World War machine gun post, Monte Lagazuoi, Dolomiti, Italy by

This area was one of the scenes of the mountain front line between Italy and Austria in the First World War. A grim affair that involved tunnels and trenches carved into the mountain rock. Several of the sites are preserved such as the machine gun post here just below the summit of Lagazuoi. There are numerous obvious emplacements that can be encountered on the many trails in the area.

Great work mate. I love the feel of this image, it’s a little haunting in some ways.

    Keep creating the Magic.

  • Yes this mountain war was brutal. They tunnelled out positions in the rock in the most unbelievable places, high up and on sheer rock faces. then the other side tunnelled under them and exploded charges that brought the mountain down and so it went on.
