These are ‘espigueiros’ in Lindoso, Parque Nacional da Peneda-Geres, Portugal.
They are very common in this part of Portugal and each village has its own style. Some age back centuries, some are more recent. They are basically grain and maize stores to protect the contents from weather and rats and are often grouped together in a communal area.

Such interesting architecture…..something I have never seen until now…….love that moody sky……….Fabulous photography Andy!

  • Its something you see all over north Portugal and North West Spain in rural areas. I always thought they had some religious purpose, as they are often adorned with crosses. But the “Rough Guide” set me straight!

    Thanks for the kind comment.

I love how I can travel through another artist’s eye……….I live in Canada, have travelled a fair bit but not too much to Europe (only Ireland, Germany & Greece)………..I know I will find this series fascinating………Cheers, Rose

They could have shot Lord of the Rings here. Amazing architecture and your treatment has given them mystery.

  • Yes Roger this area certainly had that feel, mind you we had 3 days of torrential rain and this really was making the best of a bad lot photographically speaking.
