Leaving Rottnest Island

Written on a way from Rottnest Island, Western Australia

. . .

So long, Rottnest,
Your clear beaches
And pure beauty left behind.
Your silver sand,
Protruding rocks,
Blue sky.

My heart is longing to stay,
I feel that I belong
To one of private beaches
Forever strolling
On shifting sand through crystal waters…

So warm, so free,
Attempting to capture beauty,
Elusive, clean and true.
For thousand of years you stood,
And now I am here
And belong, dissolved in salty air.

My hair
turning into seaweed,
I feel my growing membranes
Or may be tail.

I’ll stroll into your waters
Further, further I walk
The water now is above me, sun shining through above my head.
I dive with dolphins
And they lead me
to treasure chest,

I take it to the shore
And open.
And there
I find my happiness

. . .

brilliantly written and also expresses the sadness I felt after visiting the Island and snorkelling for a whole day.

Thank you Chris, I’m glad that I expressed my feelings right – sadness it is what I felt when I left it. My hair also became so salty from the water splash. That’s where seaweed analogy came from.

I too love islands and beaches in general. Often at the end of holidays I wonder if I really am best returning to the city. However as with other aspects of life I believe balance is the key to being at peace.

  • Yes TonyRyan, I don’t think I would really want to be a mermaid. For a start, there aren’t any computers I could use under water for my favourite RedBubble! ;-)

Hi Pagly2! I just put camera in a bag to go to the toilet, and when I opened the door, they were there! Sadly I was so surprised, that I didn’t rush to snatch the camera back to action, so, no, I didn’t … :-(

This is so beautiful a description of an amazing Island. I have been there many times, fishing, diving and swimming with Rays………. My hair
    turning into seaweed,
    I feel my growing membranes
    Or may be tail.

I have looked at your images and am blown away……………. Tatiana, I hope you are here to stay, even when you are too good for the place…………
